Interviewing at NREL

Welcome to what we hope is the first of many visits to NREL's campus! Use this information to ensure your interview experience is rewarding, safe, and productive.

Getting to NREL

See how to get to and around NREL's South Table Mountain campus in Golden.

Getting Your Visitor Badge

  1. Enter campus using the East Entrance (off Denver West Parkway) and pull up to the check-in booth using the left lane.
    • If you are a U.S. citizen, you must present a valid government-issued photo ID.
    • If you are NOT a U.S. citizen, you must present a current passport OR a current permanent resident card.

  2. We will issue you a visitor parking permit and direct you to the Visitor Parking Lot.

  3. From the Visitor Parking Lot, proceed west to the Research Support Facility and enter through the courtyard to access the lobby.

  4. Check in at the security desk by providing your ID. We will issue a visitor badge and contact your host, who will escort you to your interview.

Your visitor badge will not grant you access to campus buildings, and you must remain with your NREL host throughout your stay. Any people, vehicles, packages, or bags brought onto campus are subject to search.

COVID-19/Illness Guidelines

  • If you're ill, stay home. Do not come to campus if you are sick, and call or email your interview contact to make alternate arrangements.

  • NREL monitors the CDC Community Level of COVID for Jefferson County, Colorado; Fairbanks, Alaska; and Washington, D.C. Masks are required in Level High, and masks are optional in levels Medium and Low.

Out-of-State Candidates

Travel

If NREL has reserved a vehicle for you to visit campus, here's what you need to know.

  • NREL will cover the base rental car cost. However, it cannot pay for additional features and upgrades, such as GPS.
  • NREL also will cover insurance. Note that the car rental agency is required by law to offer you insurance; decline it. If you accept additional insurance, NREL cannot reimburse you for those costs.
  • NREL is liable for all rental car insurance coverage, except any damage resulting from willful misconduct or gross negligence.
  • Before returning the rental car, you must refill its gas tank. Keep that receipt and submit it to NREL for reimbursement.

Travel Expenses and Reimbursement

NREL will reimburse the following expenses:

  • Rental car charges (excluding upgrades)
  • Gasoline for rental car (must be purchased separately and receipts must be provided)
  • Meals at per diem (no receipts necessary)
  • Taxi/Lyft/Uber/Shuttle charges between your home and the airport OR personal auto mileage at the current General Services Administration rate
  • Airport parking fees (provide receipt)
  • Baggage fees
  • Lodging and taxes up to our allotted rate, excluding incidentals (Hampton Inn and Denver West Marriott are directly billed).

If there is an issue during your travel, contact the ALTOUR travel agency at 1-833-603-3659.

For reimbursement for additional allowable expenses not directly billed to NREL (meals, personal auto mileage, baggage fees, etc.), call or email your interview contact for the appropriate forms. Please keep all receipts and provide photos or scans upon your return. Once we receive these documents, we will send you a summary of reimbursement.
