Buttons

Use buttons to highlight important actions you want users to take on your site, such as "SEARCH" or "SUBMIT."

Buttons are used when you want a user to take an action (submit, cancel, delete, add to cart) that will affect the front end or back end of the website. Buttons should not be used as links to direct users to other pages.

Avoid using multiple buttons on a page. Less popular or less important actions should be visually styled as links. On forms, best practices for user interface design advise that secondary actions, such as CANCEL or RESET, also be styled as links.

Button text on NREL.gov is capitalized. Buttons are often placed in a gray text box with call-to-action text.

The green button is commonly used for calls to action. It is required for form submissions. Green buttons on NREL.gov contain Google Analytics code that automatically tracks conversions (i.e., how many visitors to the page clicked the button) for you.

The blue button is used for actions that are not form submissions and do not need to be tracked.

The white button is used for optional tasks such as the Share/Email links at the bottom of each page.

The gray button is used for actions that are not form submissions and do not need to be tracked.
